Garden too slow?
Let radishes grow.
Start your kids growing radishes.
It’s easy, cheap, and can be done in small places. Best of all, its quick. The kids will know if they succeeded in just a week or two.
(You can usually do it even during the summer if you water a lot every day, or even twice a day. You can do it in the winter inside. But spring/early summer and fall are the easiest).
Do it until it works. Eat the radishes preferably as part of a family meal.. Then have them do it again. The kids should get used to the idea that they contribute in a tangible way to the family’s eating. That starts the psychological process of converting a family into a household.
Pole beans or bush beans would be the next easiest step. But doing more radishes, even if only seasonally, is even more important than taking the next step.
A couple of steaders let us use a couple of their photos.

Some didn’t grow well and were picked too soon.
But success (some of these were from an outside location not shown here)
